An introduction to working with children
This
introductory unit looks at the range of services for children and their
families. It also provides some initial information that will help you
to get started on your course and in placement.
Development from conception to age 16 years
This
unit will help you to have a good understanding of child development
and theories of development. It will also teach you how to observe
children and why this is important when planning for children's learning.
Mandatory units for Certificate and Diploma:
Supporting children
This
unit looks at the importance of safeguarding children and supporting
them in a range of situations. It will help you to understand how you
might keep children safe from abuse and discrimination and support them
to cope with transitions.
Keeping children safe
This unit looks at
ways in which you might keep children safe and healthy. You will learn
about how to prevent accidents and illness as well as the procedures for
dealing with these.
This unit also looks at the importance of planning the physical environment for children.
The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children
This
unit looks at the many skills that you will need to acquire in order to
be an effective practitioner. This is a wide-ranging unit that covers
the importance of building relationships with others, how to reflect and
improve upon your practice and the styles that might be used to work
with children.
Mandatory units for Diploma;
Promoting a healthy environment for children
This
unit looks at the importance of children having a healthy environment
and considers the many factors that can affect children's health. In
this unit you will learn how to plan and implement routines for children
of different ages that will meet their needs.
Play and learning in children's education
This
unit looks at the role of play in children's learning and considers how
you might support children's play. You will learn about how
practitioners' understanding of play and worlding with children has been
shaped over time and how play is currently used to support the
curriculum.
Caring for children
This unit looks at the many different settings that work with children and their families.
It
considers how children's needs can be met in different ways and how you
might work alongside other professionals to meet these needs.
Development of professional skills within children's education
This
unit will provide you with some of the underpinning knowledge that will
support your practical placement. It covers practical issues such as
time keeping, communication sldlls and dress codes as well as the skills
that you will need to work with children.
Selected optional units for Diploma:
Core of sick children
This
unit will help you learn about health promotion and how you might care
for sick children. You will also learn how to identify that a child is
unwell and the steps that you should take to support the child and his
or her family.
Nutrition and healthy food for children
This unit
looks at the importance and effects of a healthy balanced diet for
children. You will learn about the influences on food and diet and how
you might plan and prepare food for children of different ages.
Working with children with special needs
This
unit looks at what is meant by the terms 'special needs' and
'inclusion' and the legislation that is in place to support children. IL
will help you to work alongside parents and other professionals to
support children who have additional needs.
Developing children's (3-8 years) communication, language and literacy skills
This
unit looks at the development of communication, language and literacy
skills in children aged 3-8 years and how children may be supported in
this. You will also learn about how you might work alongside other
professionals with children so they can make progress in this area.
Working with babies from birth to 12 months
This
unit looks at the development of babies from birth to 12 months and
factors that might affect their development. You will also learn about
how you might promote the
development of babies through care, play and observation.
